An earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale rocked the Kashmir Valley Thursday evening, officials said. “The epicenter was in the Hindukush mountain range,” meteorological office director Sonam Lotus told IANS. Many in Srinagar felt the ground shook during the tremor.

“I rushed out of my house with the family. It was a quick jolt,” said Mustaq Ahmad, 42, of the old city.
Kashmir is situated in an earthquake-prone region.

Give our areas water, BWSSB urged

"We have asked for regular Cauvery water supply to all areas and the officials have promised to start supply by August-end" says resident of HSR Layout

The truant monsoon has several areas in the newly added zones under Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike’s (BBMP’s) jurisdiction reeling under water shortage. To redress the problems pertaining to water scarcity and underground drainage in their areas, councillors from Bommanahalli and Dasarahalli zones met officials of the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) here on Wednesday.
Range of issues
Lack of Cauvery water supply, poor borewell maintenance, dysfunctional borewells, water leakage and improper restoration of roads dug up to lay underground drainage lines were the issues that figured in the meeting.
BWSSB Chairperson Gaurav Gupta, Engineer-in-Chief T. Venkataraju heard the grievances.
Demanding that BWSSB’s free tanker water supply to their areas be continued till the city received adequate rain, most councillors wanted the board to ensure Cauvery water supply to their areas.
Water leakage
Explaining his ward’s problems, B.S. Manjunatha Reddy (Bommmanahalli ward) pointed out that pipelines along several stretches in his area had been damaged after the roads were dug up to lay new underground drainage lines. “The restoration has not been done properly and this has resulted in water leakage. That apart, of the 80 borewells, only 15 are functional. The borewell maintenance contractors say that they cannot take up work as BWSSB has not cleared their bills,” Mr. Reddy told The Hindu after the meeting.
Latha Narasimhamurthy (HSR Layout) said that the situation was same in her ward too. “Of the 48 borewells, only 15 are functional. We have asked for regular Cauvery water supply to all areas and the officials have promised to start supply by August-end,” she said.
Bommanahalli MLA Satish Reddy, Mayor D. Venkatesh Murthy and former Mayor Sharadamma were present. The Mayor advised the councillors to utilise the opportunity properly and get their problems redressed.
Contaminated water
Councillors representing Dasarahalli Zone pointed out that the borewell water in most of the wards was contaminated. This was affecting the health of several residents, they said and demanded Cauvery water instead.
“We have assured them of supply from August-end when the Cauvery IV Stage II Phase will be commissioned. This will enable supply of an additional 500 million litres of water per day (mld) to the city,” Mr. Venkataraju said.
He admitted that the 900 mld of the available Cauvery water was not enough to meet the city’s requirements.

Infosys promotes 20,000 people; utilization, retention high at TCS

BANGALORE: Infosys has promoted another 4,000 people taking the total number of promotions this year to 20,000, effective July 1, 2012. This is about over 13% of the company's total strength of 1,51,151 as on June 30.

"We have done the promotions and progressions as we talked last time, we have done 20,000 across the corporations," Infosys CEO S D Shibulal said.

The company had earlier said it would review the wage hike decision depending on the company performance. However, with lower-than-expected earnings and forecast, in dollar term, the company will not lift its freeze on salary hike any time soon.

Infosys and its subsidiaries added 9,236 (gross) people in the first quarter of FY'13, while the net addition during the period stood at 1,157 employees. The rate of attrition during the quarter was marginally higher at 14.9% against 14.7% in the January-March quarter of 2011-12.

"Typically, attrition in the first quarter (of a fiscal) goes up because people tend to go for higher studies. About 30% of our attrition was due to this reason," Shibulal said.

Meanwhile the country's lead tech player Tata Consultancy Services has continued to hire to support business growth. With campus trainees joining the company from the beginning of July-September quarter, lateral hiring accounted for 75% of total hiring in Q1. There was a total gross addition of 13,831 people (net addition of 4,962), taking the total employee strength of 243,545 on a consolidated basis.

The utilization rate (excluding trainees) was at 81.3% and that including trainees was 72.3%. The attrition rate (last twelve months-LTM) was 12.0%.

"We have been able to effectively increase our retention rate in the first quarter to over 88% and increase our utilization rates further. The on-boarding of current year's trainees has begun," said Ajoy Mukherjee, executive vice-president and global head, human resources.

TCS has a target to hire 50,000 people this year while Infosys will hire 35,000 people, which includes 13,000 jobs for its BPO operations.-TOI-
